Tips & Tricks for New Performers

Getting into performing can be an exciting journey. Here are some tips and resources to help you with song timing, DIY props, costumes, and general behind-the-scenes preparation:

Picking Up Timing in Songs

🎶 Counting Beats: Practice counting the beats in songs. Most songs follow a 4/4 time signature, meaning there are four beats per measure. Start by listening to a song and counting “1, 2, 3, 4” repeatedly to match the beats.

🎶 Clap or Tap: Use clapping or tapping your foot to physically feel the rhythm. This helps internalize the timing.

🎶 Metronome Practice: Use a metronome app to practice keeping time. Set it to various tempos to match different songs.

🎶 Subdivide Beats: Break down beats into smaller units (e.g., 1-and-2-and-3-and-4) to understand the rhythm better.

🎶 Dance or Move: Moving to the beat helps connect physically with the music. Try simple dance steps or movements to match the rhythm.

DIY Props

Simple Props: Start with basic props like fans, boas, or hats. These can be easily customized with glitter, feathers, or fabric.

Materials: Use materials like foam, cardboard, and fabric. These are inexpensive and easy to work with.

Tutorials: Look for tutorials on platforms like YouTube or Pinterest for step-by-step guides on making props.

Costumes for Peeling

💃 Layering: Choose costumes with multiple layers that can be removed piece by piece. This creates a sense of anticipation and excitement.

💃 Velcro and Snaps: Use Velcro or snaps for easy removal of costume pieces. This helps with quick changes and smooth transitions.

💃 Comfort and Fit: Ensure the costume fits well and allows for easy movement. Practice in your costume to make sure you can perform comfortably.
