Factors to Consider When Pricing Yourself

Pricing yourself is overwhelming at first, but here’s a breakdown of what to consider when setting your rate:

Set a Baseline Rate

When determining your rate, consider the type of performance you’re offering.

  • 💸 For shorter, structured sets, new performers typically start with a base performance fee.
  • 💸 For ambient or roaming entertainment, pricing is often calculated on an hourly basis, as these performances require continuous engagement rather than a single set routine.
  • 💸 If your act involves specialized skills, elaborate costuming, or additional risk factors (such as fire performance or aerial work), you can justify setting a higher rate to reflect the expertise and preparation required.

Consider Your Costs And Add on Top of Your Base Rate

  • 💸 Time: Factor in the total time you’ll spend, including rehearsal, travel, setup, performance, and teardown.
  • 💸 Costumes & Props: If you need to invest in new materials or upkeep existing ones, include that in your price.
  • 💸 Travel Expenses: If you have to drive, take public transport, or stay overnight, make sure you’re covered.
  • 💸 Insurance & Licensing: you must carry performance insurance through Specialty Insurance Agency so factor that in too

Research Industry Rates

Reach out to local performers in your niche to see what others charge in your area. Rates can vary widely depending on location, event type, and experience level.

Know Your Market

  • 🎯 Private Events (Weddings, Birthdays, Corporate): These tend to have higher budgets, so you can charge more.
  • 🎯 Community or Nonprofit Events: May have lower budgets, but you can negotiate perks like photos/videos for your portfolio.
  • 🎯 Clubs & Bars: Pay varies greatly—some offer a door split or tips, while others have a set rate.

Factor in Value & Unique Selling Points

If you offer something unique (e.g., live interaction, audience engagement, special effects), charge accordingly.

Offer Different Pricing Tiers

  • 💸 Basic Package: A short set with simple costume/props.
  • 💸 Standard Package: A longer or more elaborate performance.
  • 💸 Premium Package: Includes extra services like audience interaction, special requests, or additional time.

Be Confident in Your Pricing

If they try to negotiate, don’t undersell yourself. You can adjust, but don’t go so low that it’s not worth your time. If they ask for a lower price, you can reduce what’s included rather than just discounting.
