How to Recognize a Scam in the Entertainment Industry

One question I get asked a lot is whether or not an entertainment company is a scam or legitimate.

It’s not a simple answer. Here are some ways to tell if an entertainment company may be a scam:

⚠️ They require upfront payment:

Legitimate companies usually don’t require payment before providing a service. Be wary of companies that ask for large sums of money before you have even started working with them.

⚠️They make unrealistic promises: A company that promises you instant fame or guarantees you will be a star is likely not being truthful. The entertainment industry is highly competitive, and there are no guarantees of success.

⚠️They have little online presence: Scammers often create fake websites or social media accounts to give the appearance of legitimacy. A company with little to no online presence may be a red flag.

⚠️They dont have a referral or client list: Any reputable company have client or referral list ready to show. And are open to provide them.

⚠️They don’t have physical office: A company with no physical office, or that provides a vague or incomplete location, may be trying to avoid being tracked down.

⚠️They do not give you a contract or do not let you read it through: Legitimate companies typically have contracts that outline the terms of their agreement with clients. Be wary of any company that does not provide a contract or does not allow you to read it in full before signing.

It’s important to note that not all of these signs will be present in every scam situation, but if a company exhibits several of these red flags, it’s best to be cautious and do further research
